Cashiers, North Carolina

Cashiers is a green valley at 3,500 feet surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Cashiers area is in a quiet corner of Southwestern North Carolina in the heart of the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains range.

It's one of the few places left where you can set off without a destination and always arrive some- where beautiful.

It s a country of grand mountain views, of tiny towns that are little more than a few stores and a post office, and of waterfalls (including White Water Falls, the tallest in Eastern America). You won't find crowds. Or traffic jams, or neon lights, mammoth malls, or theme parks. Cashiers is beautiful...by nature.

Cashiers is a crossroad of sorts that offers up a rather modest assortment of one-story commercial buildings in the straight-from-the-sawmill style of summer camps. Yet inside are art studios and galleries, sophisticated outdoor outfitters, and makers of specialty furniture.

Set your own pace; that's the beauty of it Cashiers is an outdoor holiday. You can play golf, stroll along a forest trail, hike, snow ski, or water ski. You can hit a tennis ball or cast a line into Cashiers' famous trout waters. Stay at a country inn or lodge. Restaurants and inns are noted for their excellent cuisine. The shopping is fun: toys, antiques, art, made-in- Carolina crafts, apparel, gourmet foods, and homemade goodies.

Set your own pace, please yourself. There is SO much here to do-or so little. That's the beauty of a visit to Cashiers.

In the early 1900s, several inns were established in the Cashiers area to serve Southern gentry who visited the mountains in the summer to escape the heat of the lowlands. Many of these families built summer homes, and their descendants still return with others to enjoy the excellent golf courses and tennis facilities, as well as a multitude of natural resources. The historic Hampton Inn, famous for its 18-hole, par 71, championship course, is in Cashiers. Close by is Sapphire Valley, a year-round resort community that received a four-star rating in the Mobile Travel Guide.

The sunsets. The moon over the mountains. Wildflowers among the fallen leaves. A mountain creek cascading to a lake. Sunlight turning water into melted silver. Autumn colors against an azure sky. A frieze of fiery color among the tree tops. A crystal kingdom, diamond sparkles on the snow. Any time of year, the Cashiers corner of North Carolina-casts its spell. Around every curve, over every ridge, something beautiful.
