| Brevard College |
Many people may not regard Brevard as a true "college town," but in many ways it is even more of a college town than Raleigh, Chapel Hill, or Durham. The town of Brevard has always prided itself on the location of one of the nation's finest independent liberal arts colleges within its city limits, and Brevard College welcomes all visitors to campus..
Traditionally a two-year college, this year Brevard College has received full accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) for new four-year baccalaureate degree programs in music and art. Other baccalaureate programs will be launched in the near future, starting immediately with environmental studies.
In addition to new baccalaureate programs, the College continues to maintain Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Fine Arts degrees. Over ninety percent of Brevard College's associate degree graduates continue their education at major four year institutions. We relish the challenge of building a balanced and distinctive four-year liberal arts college, while remaining true to the values which this institution has stood for almost a century and a half,- said Brevard College President J. Thomas Bertrand. Our finest professors continue to be as devoted to the teaching of freshmen as to the mentoring of our juniors and seniors.-
Admission to Brevard College 'is based upon academic preparedness, social maturity, leadership ability, and above all, potential. Each applicant is considered on the basis of his/her individual merit.
On a community level, the Brevard College Office of Community Education continues to reach out into the community with continuing education, special outreach programs, and Educational Partnerships - a series of courses that will be taught in cooperation-with various local agencies. We are working, to open a whole new future of educational opportunities for the community, said Director of Community Education Jacolyn Campbell.
More than 100 non-credit enrichment courses - the core of the Community Education program - will be offered to the community throughout this fall. The courses will range from business, computers and liberal arts to hobbies and crafts, recreation and music. All courses are taught by local experts, and range in price from $10 to $75.
In cooperation with the Brevard Chamber of Commerce, the College will also offer a series of courses called Inside Transylvania The purpose of the series will be to educate and motivate county residents who are wishing to make a productive contribution to the community. Over 40 experts and local leaders will explore public issues and community concerns to provide a better understanding of life in Transylvania County.
Throughout the fall Brevard College also holds numerous cultural activities such as music recitals, art exhibits, theater productions, guest lectures and athletic events. Many of these activities are listed in this publication's Calendar of Events, but the College also offers an information line Call 884-8333 for a weekly updates of College events.
Historically Brevard College has always been closely allied with the growth of Transylvania County. The College's parent institution, Epworth School, was started by Sarah and F. Taylor in 1895, and was taken over in 1904 by the Women's Home Mission of the Southern Methodist Church and renamed Brevard Industrial Institute, serving as a public education facility until 1934.
That year, the Western North Carolina Conference of the Methodist Church ordered the merger of the two financially struggling schools, Weaver and Rutherford colleges (both circa 1853), and designated the Brevard Institute facility as the campus for a new Brevard College.
Now, almost 60 years later, the College affirms the vision of its founders, "that none shall ever be turned away for want of means."
Visitors are welcome to stop by the Admissions office anytime for information and a campus tour; weekend visits are by appointment. Call (828) 884-8300.
